Botanical features

The Crocus Sativus L. is a triploid sterile species belonging to the iris family. It is a perennial herbaceous plant that grows from bulb 10 to 25 cm in height. The bulb has an oval shape, flat on the basis and covered with many concentric spathes. It is an underground organ that accumulates all the substances necessary to blossom and to sprout. The leaves are very narrow (1,5 to 2,5 mm wide), dark green, linear and have a white spathe in its inner part and a nervation outside. Each flower consists of six petals, 3 inside and 3 outside, joined to a large tube that rises from the outside top of the ovary. The style goes from the top of the undergroud ovary through the perigonium until one single stigma with three bright red filaments: this last one is the part of the plant for which man grows it.
